Keeping My Eyes on the Prize

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

In the second year of my entrepreneurial journey, I'm keeping my eyes on the prize.

Your purpose will be bigger than you. It's not a hobby. It's a calling—that thing you must do.

"Keep your eyes on the prize, hold on, hold on

Hold on, hold on Keep your eyes on the prize, hold on, hold on"

As I started writing this, the song "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize," an anthem of the Civil Rights Movement that is a variation on the spiritual, "Keep Your Hand on the Plow," came to mind, and I asked myself, "What is the prize I'm pursuing when it comes to my business?" Beyond the independence, beyond the accolades, beyond the potential trappings of success, beyond the feeling of pride—above all else, I want to walk in my purpose.

I believe that purpose is beyond talent or passion. It is the selfless sustained actions in which you persevere to meet a need that you can't ignore. I don't mean a need you have for yourself. I mean a need that other people have. Your purpose will be bigger than you. It's not a hobby. It's a calling—that thing you must do.

I founded IT'S EDUMENTARY because I believe I must do what I can to support the teaching profession. It really distresses me that educators, particularly those in higher education, are often left to fend for themselves in two of the most complex arenas there are—the college classroom and academic culture. While I can't do anything about educational bureaucracies, I can help instructors discover their "teaching voice." I can hold their hand as they take tentative steps to discovering new approaches and educational technologies. I can help them elevate their instructional materials. I can provide them with "roll-up-my-sleeves" support in which I am as invested in their success and their students' transformations as they are.

I don't fool myself that I can help everyone. There are many people "doing teaching" who are not necessarily called to teach. I can only hope and pray that they will find the path that is right for them—not only for their sakes, but for the sakes of their students. Meanwhile, I'm here to help educators, whether they are teaching undergraduate, graduate, or professional development courses, to design learning experiences that make a difference in minds and lives. That's the prize I have my eyes on.
